The First Century of Texas State University
Founded in 1899 as a normal school in San Marcos, Texas State University (TXST) began with a clear mission: to prepare teachers who would transform public education in the state. Classes opened in 1903 at Old Main with just over 300 students, marking the start of a legacy rooted in community and academic service.
During its first century, the institution expanded from training teachers to granting bachelor’s and master’s degrees, while navigating the challenges of two world wars. It also played a role in social progress, admitting its first Afro-American students in 1963 and later growing rapidly in both enrollment and campus facilities.
By the late 20th century, TXST had evolved into a comprehensive university, laying the foundation for its future as a research institution and reaffirming its commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and innovation.
Entering the 21st Century
Since 2000, Texas State University has grown into a modern, inclusive, and research-driven institution. In 2003, it adopted the name Texas State University–San Marcos, later shortened in 2013 to Texas State University. It became a Hispanic-Serving Institution in 2011, reflecting its strong commitment to diversity, with Hispanic enrollment surpassing 40%.
The university also advanced in research, achieving Emerging Research University status in 2012 and the R2 Carnegie Classification in 2016. New research centers and expanded facilities—such as the Ingram School of Engineering, the Performing Arts Center, and the Round Rock Campus—have supported its rapid growth.
This spirit of expansion and innovation reached a historic milestone on September 4, 2024, with the announcement of Texas State University Querétaro, the institution’s first international campus. Designed to bring the same academic quality, research focus, and inclusive values to Mexico, the campus represents a bold step in extending opportunities beyond borders.
In August 2025, the first generation of Bobcats in Queretaro began their journey. For these students, the campus offers the chance to earn a degree valid in the U.S. and one valid in Mexico, opening pathways to global careers while experiencing a vibrant, multicultural community close to home. This expansion reflects Texas State’s mission to prepare leaders who think globally, act locally, and shape a brighter future for their communities.
Today, as Texas State celebrates 125 years of history, it not only honors its legacy in San Marcos but also embraces a new chapter in Queretaro—one that will inspire generations of students to dream bigger, achieve more, and lead with purpose.
Belonging to a Global Bobcat Family
Texas State University’s commitment to academic excellence and student success is reflected in its national and international recognition. In 2024, the U.S. Department of State named Texas State a Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution Leader, reaffirming its role in expanding global opportunities for students.
The university consistently stands out in higher education rankings. U.S. News & World Report placed Texas State #39 in the nation for best online bachelor’s programs and #109 for best online master’s in education programs, while BachelorsDegreeCenter.org ranked it #7 for best bachelor’s degree in digital communication. In addition, Texas State is ranked among the top 9% worldwide for international students by Study Abroad Aide, and is #30 in the U.S. for Hispanic enrollment, according to Hispanic Outlook on Education.
All academic programs are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), ensuring the highest standards of quality and continuous improvement. These distinctions confirm that Texas State is not only a university with history and tradition, but also a forward-looking institution recognized for its innovation, diversity, and global reach.
