Boko the Bobcat: The Legendary Mascot of Texas State University

If you’ve ever been to a football game, pep rally, or campus event at Texas State University, you’ve likely seen him hyping the crowd, crowd-surfing, and dancing like a pro. We’re talking about Boko the Bobcat, the fierce, fun-loving, and totally unforgettable college mascot who’s been the heart of Bobcat pride for generations.

But how did Boko become the icon he is today?

To find out, we have to rewind over 100 years—back when Texas State was known as Southwest Texas Normal School. At that time, the athletic teams had quirky names like the Nymphs, the Wonders, and the Goblins. But as school spirit began to soar, it became clear that Texas State needed a strong and unified identity

The Birth of a Legend

Enter Oscar Strahan, the newly appointed athletic director with a mission. He formed a committee to find a mascot that would embody Texas toughness, pride, and resilience. The choice? The bobcat—a fierce animal known for its speed, smarts, and relentless energy. In 1921, the bobcat officially became the university’s mascot.

“A bobcat will fight you with everything he has—four claws, teeth, speed, and brains,” Strahan said. That spirit became the heartbeat of Texas State.

And yes, there were once real bobcats on campus, brought to football games to roar for the home team.

Meet Boko: A Star Is Born

It wasn’t until 1964 that the bobcat got his name. A campus-wide contest led to Beth Greenless, a sophomore from Luling, Texas, winning with her suggestion: “Boko.” She beat out nearly 100 entries and walked away with a $5 prize—and a place in Texas State University history

Boko made his first appearance at a football game and instantly stole the spotlight.

From Wildcat to Wild Star

Since then, Boko has had multiple glow-ups—including a now-retired saber-toothed phase—and transformed into the iconic college mascot we know today. With his perfect 4.0 GPA (naturally), infectious energy, and leadership on and off the field, Boko isn’t just a mascot—he’s the living spirit of the Texas State Bobcats

He’s the one leading chants, lighting up the stands, and reminding every student, alum, and fan what it means to wear maroon and gold.

Once a Bobcat, Always a Bobcat

Through every era, one thing stays the same: Boko is the heart of Texas State University’s traditions, spirit, and community pride. He’s more than just a symbol—he’s family.

So the next time you see Boko at a game, give him a high five, join the chant, and remember: being a Bobcat means never backing down.
